Comma After Question Mark

As the word ‘which’ indicates a new thought or idea, a natural pause is necessary, so a comma should be inserted, but many students seem to feel the word itself performs this function and omit the punctuation mark. In instances where punctuation would change the meaning of the quotation—that is, when the punctuation, such as a question mark or exclamation point, does not belong to the quotation—it should be. If you don’t recognize the symbol at the end of the last sentence, it’s called an interrobang, and it’s a combination of a question mark and an exclamation point.

However, if the quote is a question, a question mark needs to be used to show the reader that the sentence is an interrogative. Note in the first example below that when the question mark is part of the title of a work that is set in italics, as it is in the cited novel, the question mark is italicized. You can't put an exclamation mark and a comma together;

Use a question mark when the speaker is asking a question, regardless of where the dialogue tag is placed in the sentence.

A comma after a salutation or greeting in an email should only be reserved when the email’s content is informal and personal. (the comma would go outside the quotation marks for bre.) the comma is still necessary in this case because the question mark is not replacing it. For both american and british english conventions, the comma goes before the closing quotation mark as long as no other quoted information comes after the indirect remark.
